Chapter 59: The Fading City (24)
The team, made up of experienced players, saw what was happening and quickly backed away from Zeng Yi.
Zeng Yi was writhing on the ground in intense pain. His voice grew increasingly strange and inhuman as the water drained from his body at a frightening speed.
The creature that Zeng Yi had become stood up, roaring at everyone around it. Its mouth opened wider than any human could manage.
“How could this be? I saw him inject the antidote myself,” Chu Yao said in disbelief, standing behind Chen Tianju.
Chen Tianju immediately raised his gun and fired two shots. The zombie fell to the ground, crashing into a table and chairs. However, it quickly got up again, and its wounds began to heal rapidly.
Everyone raised their guns and fired at the zombie, but they couldn’t stop it. Not only did their bullets fail to kill it, but they also seemed to make its wounds heal even faster.
“There’s something wrong with the antidote. If this continues, none of us will survive,” Chen Tianju said, his voice steady.
“Let’s go!” he ordered.
Chen Tianju led the group out of the restaurant and locked the stairway door behind them. The zombies outside pounded on the door so hard that it felt like the whole floor was shaking.
“There are so many zombies down there... What are we going to do now, Brother Tianju?” Ma Xin asked, his face filled with fear.
They were trapped in the stairway, with mutated zombies above and an army of zombies below. The door offered no real protection, and there seemed to be no escape from certain death, causing the team to panic.
“Stay calm,” Chen Tianju said in a soothing tone. “Prepare the bombs and head down.”
Facing a group of regular zombies was better than dealing with a mutant zombie they couldn’t defeat.
Hearing Chen Tianju’s calm voice made the others feel slightly better.
“Do you think they knew there was something wrong with the antidote?” Chu Yao wondered aloud, referring to Ye Nianchu and the others.
A few days ago, while searching for the antidote, she had run into Ye Nianchu. Later, Ye Nianchu had ordered a man to throw a knife at her, which seemed intentional.
Chu Yao questioned why Ye Nianchu would target her without any clear reason, suspecting it was part of Ye Nianchu’s plan.
“Don’t dismiss that possibility,” Chen Tianju said. “There’s something suspicious about the person with her.”
Weak?
If that were true, they wouldn’t have been able to throw that knife.
The group raced down the stairs, the door being smashed by a mutated zombie. A bomb was dropped, causing a burst of fire, dust, and smoke. The explosion was so loud it made their ears ring, and nearby glass shattered.
Despite their preparation, they were still a bit disheveled, including Chu Yao, who was protected in the middle of the group.
Not knowing if the mutant zombies were dead or not, the group dared not look back. Although the elevator was operational, no one wanted to risk using it.
If the power went out or they encountered zombies when opening the door, the situation would be disastrous.
They continued down the stairs to the 7th floor on foot. The only NPC in their group, the hotel manager, was shaking so much he could barely stand and complained, “This cursed broadcast attracted all the zombies.”
No one had time to listen to his complaints; if he weren’t useful, he would have been left behind long ago.
Chen Tianju took out the last bomb and thought about where to use it to clear a path. Chu Yao looked around nervously and said, “If this place collapses, we’ll be buried alive… let’s wait a bit… maybe.”
Suddenly, Chu Yao stopped, her eyes lighting up with joy.
There was gunfire coming from below.
Chen Tianju sighed with relief. He led the group further down, following the sound of the gunfire to the fifth floor.
Chu Yao quickly spotted a tall and handsome figure in the crowd below.
