Chapter 60: The Fading City (25)
She bit her lip and ran forward, calling out, "Brother Junheng."
Without waiting for him to respond, she continued on her path.
Chen Tianju's voice echoed, "Alliance Master, she's back."
---
Meanwhile, Ye Nianchu and Qin Mubai had finally reached the second underground floor.
There was no radio signal, and the zombies were concentrated in the Warehouse area. It would be dangerous to enter there directly.
They decided to take temporary shelter in a small utility room. The noise of two explosions from above caused the zombies outside to move around in a frenzy.
The second explosion had been quite close.
It was taking longer than expected for Chen Tianju and his team to break through, which meant there was likely a rescue operation underway.
Chen Tianju's strategy to lure the zombies to the top floor made sense now; he wasn’t acting recklessly but was actually waiting for help.
"We're not going into the Warehouse. We're heading to the underground lab," Ye Nianchu said, looking at Qin Mubai.
"You go ahead for now. If I’m not back by this time tomorrow, you..."
Qin Mubai suddenly moved closer, lowering his body so that his cool breath brushed against her neck. His dark eyes locked onto hers, and there was an unreadable emotion in his gaze.
Ye Nianchu couldn't finish her sentence.
"Sister, are you going to leave me to join the others?" His warm breath tickled her neck as he spoke in a deeper voice, almost to himself.
Despite the smile on his lips, there was a hint of coldness in his tone.
If that was the case, he would destroy everything except the two of them and then take her away.
He would find her in the real world eventually.
"I didn't," Ye Nianchu replied, feeling confused.
When had she ever left him?
Why did he speak as if she were being unkind?
"This is a personal issue between me and them. I can’t drag you into it," Ye Nianchu explained.
Qin Mubai lowered his gaze to meet hers. "I said I won’t let anyone take my sister away."
"And in my mind, there’s no such thing as a mere teammate."
"Are you afraid I’ll be a burden?"
His last words, filled with resignation, were hard to ignore.
Ye Nianchu thought with some relief that he was a bit younger than her. Sisters don’t shout without reason.
Her thoughts were interrupted by the sudden banging on the door.
It was a zombie dog.
"The other side has two S-class abilities," Ye Nianchu said calmly.
On the penultimate day of the A-ranked game, special abilities are granted to S-ranked players. The longer it goes on, the worse things get.
Qin Mubai frowned, not just because of the S-class abilities but because of how well she understood the situation. His eyes darkened slightly.
The zombie dog’s banging attracted more zombies. The utility room’s door wasn’t very strong, and they prepared to fight their way out when suddenly, it became eerily quiet outside.
Not a single sound.
It was as if the zombies had vanished, which was very strange.
Ye Nianchu gripped her weapon tightly and held her breath.
Bang—
The noise of metal hitting the wall reached her ears, and the ground shook with it.
Heavy footsteps approached, one after the other.
Something outside was causing even the zombies to retreat. This violent demolition of the door was certainly beyond what a human could achieve.
