Chapter 51: The Fading City (16)
The hotel was so packed with zombies that you couldn’t see the end of them. They pushed and shoved their way forward, some stepping on their fallen companions, breaking the floor-to-ceiling windows on the second floor, and climbing up.
Ye Nianchu took a deep breath to calm herself.
Compared to the other survivors in the hotel, she was in a better state of mind. They were all gathered in the restaurant on the fifth floor, which was too low. If the zombies reached them, they’d be the first to suffer.
They were barely surviving. The people who had gone to the warehouse for food hadn’t returned, and no one else dared to go out. After two days of hunger, they were too weak to run away.
Now, a new group of survivors had led the zombies right to them.
The two groups faced each other. Seeing the blackened gun muzzles, no one in the hotel dared to speak.
In situations like this, only the strongest survive. Morality and order don’t matter. The one with the weapon is in control.
“Brother Tianju, what should we do with these people?”
The young man leading the group had a striking appearance and a cold demeanor. “Ignore them. Keep going up. If anyone tries to follow, kill them.”
They were just weak survivors, barely clinging to life, not worth bothering with.
By now, the zombies had taken over the third floor.
The people on the fifth floor were in panic.
“Take me with you, please!”
“Let me follow you; I’ll do anything.”
Cheng Tianju glanced down from his higher position. “Are there any other living people in the hotel?”
“There are two more, a man and a woman. They’ve been staying in the penthouse suite and haven’t come down,” said a man in his thirties, hoping to gain favor.
He hadn’t changed his clothes for days. His suit was wrinkled, and he looked worn out. But with zombies everywhere, just being alive was a blessing.
“Those two have guns. I’m the hotel manager, and I know the layout inside very well. Take me with you, and I can guide you.”
To become a manager in a large hotel, he had to be smart. Knowing how to judge situations is a basic skill.
These armed, well-dressed people were clearly not ordinary. If you want to survive, you have to show your worth.
Cheng Tianju said nothing and led his team forward. One of his subordinates threw half a bottle of water and a piece of bread to the man. “Follow.”
The man grabbed the bread and water, bowing and nodding eagerly as he followed.
The other survivors watched and hoped to do the same. But before they could speak, the muffled sound of a silenced gunshot rang out, and the man at the front of the line fell with a new hole in his head.
Red and white fluids splattered everywhere.
No one else dared to move.
The armed men continued shooting, and soon, no one on the fifth floor was left alive.
---
Many surveillance systems, including the one in the elevator, were no longer working.
Ye Nianchu saw the logo lit up on the computer screen outside the elevator and realized the group was preparing to go up to the top floor.
They couldn’t let them come up and be blocked at the door. That would be a disaster.
“Let’s go to the 15th floor and intercept them.”
The 15th floor had an open-air western restaurant. With their supplies, it’s best to control their movements.
If negotiations fail, they could take action.
Ye Nianchu stood up and was about to leave when Qin Mubai pulled her back. “Sister, I’ll go first.”
Without waiting for her response, he headed out the door.
Time was short, so Ye Nianchu quickly followed him to another elevator.
---
“What if the zombies come? We might get stuck,” the only girl in the group said nervously, staring at the elevator doors.
Zombies are not lacking in numbers. They can build human ladders, and high floors might not be safe.
