Chapter 50 - The Fading City (15)

A loud bang echoed in their heads.

Not daring to stay any longer, the men quickly dragged the lifeless body and fled the scene.

They decided to stay far away from this floor from now on.

What about these two people? They’re not just good-looking; they’re also vicious and downright evil.

One moment, the guy seems like he’s just relying on his looks. The next moment, he turns into a deadly, unblinking killer.

The woman, although thin and frail-looking, would have shot them without hesitation if they had been any slower.

They are not good people. Just looking at their eyes sends shivers down people's spines.

---

Ye Nianchu took an ice cream out of the refrigerator and handed one to Qin Mubai. She then walked to the floor-to-ceiling window and carefully lifted a corner of the curtain.

It’s very cozy to eat ice cream in the comfort of your room while more than half of the area is without power.

Outside, the world is eerily silent. Through the telescope, she sees several zombie dogs eating a body. After a few minutes, the corpse, its face unrecognizable due to the bites, rises shakily.

Highly decomposed bodies float on the river’s surface. Rotten flesh is carried downstream by the flowing water, and a few crows land on the bodies, pecking at them.

Water sources and flies, which act as intermediate hosts, are ways the virus spreads.

Many people have been infected for a long time, but the timing of symptoms varies from person to person.

Three days passed safely this way, and no one came up to this floor again.

(Game Day Fifteen)

Outside, the sun blazes, scorching the city. The decay of the zombies’ bodies worsens, and blackened blood clots are everywhere on the ground.

Ye Nianchu sees a few people opening a supply box on the rooftop of a building half a block away. The game randomly spawns supply boxes, and their appearance is unpredictable.

These boxes usually contain valuable items like weapons, food, and medicines.

Some players have even found a bottle of water when they went out to buy it.

Ye Nianchu had never experienced such luck.

This is probably the closest she’ll ever get to a supply box, but she can neither get to it nor approach it.

Qin Mubai sat at the bar, his gaze fixed on Ye Nianchu. Her long hair was casually tied up, and the sunlight streaming through the curtain cracks highlighted her fair face.

Noticing his gaze, Ye Nianchu put down the curtain and turned her head. Even though she knew he was a quintessential “white lotus”^1, his clear eyes were still very attractive.

Before they could speak, a loud explosion erupted from a short distance away.

Smoke and debris filled the air, scattering human tissue.

A bomb had been thrown beneath the building where the supply box appeared, causing several nearby small stores to collapse and showing the extent of the damage.

They were using up the newly acquired supplies.

The two stood side by side behind the curtains, watching the situation unfold.

The dust and smoke from the explosion covered the entire street, reducing visibility. The noise was loud enough to attract zombies from several blocks away.

About two dozen people, covered in dust, were running toward the hotel. Compared to other buildings nearby, the hotel was the best choice.

But they were being followed by countless zombies, with more approaching from the side. As they were about to be surrounded, the person in front turned and shot at the legs of the person behind without hesitation.

The smell of blood attracted the zombies, and those who were hit were quickly overwhelmed.

The human body proved fragile against the zombie horde, with people being disemboweled and limbs torn off as they were eaten alive.

Eventually, some of the people managed to escape into the hotel, but this also drew a large number of zombies to the location.

Looking down from their vantage point, the area was a sea of zombies.

^1 "White lotus" refers to someone who appears innocent and virtuous on the surface but may have hidden intentions or a manipulative nature.

Translation Update! 🍙 Translation Update! 🍙 ✨ Quick note: English isn't my first language, so please understand there might be some typos or awkward phrasing - I'm doing my best! ✨ Hey everyone, just a quick update: As of today, April 28, 2025 , I want to give you all a heads-up about a few small issues you might come across in the story, specifically with some of the prop names. It's not exactly a typo issue—it's more about changes I've made over time. For instance, I originally used the term 'data concealment number' but later changed it to 'number concealment data.' Since these are just prop names in the story, it's not a major issue for the plot, but I totally get that some of you might find it a little annoying if you're really particular about details. ...

“Bang—” The air trembled, and bright light hit Gu Zhan's eyelids, making him squint. “Patient 707 has been admitted.” A cold female voice sounded. Patient 707? Who? Gu Zhan squinted against the blinding light and realized he was lying down under a surgical shadowless lamp. Next to him stood several people in deep green surgical scrubs, their faces obscured by the light. One of them leaned over to look at him; the blue medical mask covered most of his features, leaving only a pair of narrow, dark eyes visible. He said, “707 has woken up. Administer a sedative.” A syringe pierced the back of Gu Zhan's hand, and the cold liquid flowed in, gradually blurring his consciousness... ... “Crash—” “Bang!” The sound of metal clashing echoed sharply. A metal bed was forcefully pushed away, sliding a great distance before crashing against the wall. Gu Zhan's head struck the bed frame heavily, and the intense pain momentarily brought him back to awareness. Then came the sound of a door ...

The broadcast from the main system echoed throughout the instance. In the pitch-black snowy night, accompanied by the eerie howling wind of the ebony forest, Jiang Yan felt utterly disoriented. The "Hunter" in front of him couldn’t hear the main system’s intrusive voice and was still waiting for his "little sheep" to kiss him. However, Jiang Yan simply reached out, gently touched the demon-like ram horns of the "Hunter," and then unhesitatingly pulled the blanket over his head. Hunter: "...So disobedient." Soon after, a kiss landed softly on the top of Jiang Yan's head. A pair of long, broad hands rested on his waist as the "Hunter" drifted into slumber. Meanwhile, the game forum’s players erupted into an explosive celebration: [I’m dying of laughter! What kind of penalty is this?? It’s my first time hearing such a ridiculous deduction reason!] [“Please immediately kiss the BOSS.” What the heck? Hahaha...] [This will go down...

Jiang Yan ignored 663, curling up under the blanket like a quail. The "Hunter" holding him would occasionally rub his head, seemingly captivated by the texture. Jiang Yan obediently played the role of a "pet." Based on his years of watching horror movies and reading scary stories, he knew that being "clever" or "kind-hearted" in such games only led to quicker deaths. "You still have five days," the Hunter said, savoring the softness and compliance of the person in his arms. His pale, pupil-less eyes glinted with pleasure. Although a sheep's head couldn't show human expressions, it was clear he was smiling. Hearing this, the four people huddled in the cage shivered in unison. Only Wang Yu sat blankly by the edge, tears streaming as he gazed at his lover. The "Cops and Robbers" Game The "Hunter" acted as the cop, giving the players (the "robbers") ten days to escape the forest. If they found t...

In early September, during a Mathematical Analysis class at A University of Science and Technology, the sophomore students were noticeably distracted. The young professor at the podium glanced down and spotted a large group of students engrossed in their phones. Though he wasn’t a high school teacher, he couldn’t help but lament inwardly: “This generation is worse than the last. Even in Math Analysis class, they dare to slack off?” He could already envision the dismal outcomes on the final grades. Clearing his throat somewhat theatrically, he still received no attention. Growing annoyed, the professor resolved to be tough with the grades this year to combat this poor attitude. At the back of the classroom, Ge Zhicheng's heart raced as he continuously refreshed the backend of the academic system's page. What the professor didn’t know was that today was the day for second-year students in the College of Science to be reassigned to dormitories; the assignment list would be post...
