Chapter 81: Lost Song of the Deep (8)
Ye Nianchu wanted to keep watching.
Suddenly, a hand slapped against the window.
A dark shape seemed to be climbing up.
Ye Nianchu realized the green lights she saw were actually eyes!
The eyes of something outside the window.
It looked like it was going to peek inside.
She glanced at the bed, planning to pull Qin Mubai over to pretend to sleep. But he was faster.
Everything spun around.
Before Ye Nianchu knew it, she was on the bed, her forehead against his chest.
Outside, glowing eyes stared in, leaving big water stains on the windowsill.
She felt something crawling along her spine, which was very scary. Ye Nianchu forced herself to breathe slowly, trying to remember what she had seen.
The light was too dim.
She couldn’t see everything clearly.
But she knew the hands were longer than usual and looked different.
After a few minutes, the feeling of being watched went away.
They stayed still, afraid the thing outside might come back.
The soft, sleepy tune kept playing, but Ye Nianchu fought against it.
After a while, a low voice came from above her. "It’s gone."
Ye Nianchu noticed that Qin Mubai’s hand on her back was clenched into a fist. He had a small smile on his lips.
Not many guys would notice these details, especially now.
She got up and looked at the water stain on the windowsill.
It came from the sea.
"Did you see it clearly?" Ye Nianchu asked.
"Yes." Qin Mubai said with a slight smile. "There was webbing on its hands, so it’s not a spirit."
He knew a lot about different bodies and animals.
So, he could tell right away.
"Webbed?" Ye Nianchu wondered. "Could it be a siren? A half-human, half-fish creature?"
It could secretly affect the ship’s equipment and make everyone fall into a deep sleep.
No ordinary creature could do that.
Sirens.
She really wanted to catch one and look at it closely.
Seeing her interest, Qin Mubai said, "It’s too soon to call it a siren. But with those webbed hands, it probably isn’t very pretty."
He thought about capturing and studying it, if possible.
But seeing Ye Nianchu’s interest...
If it was beautiful, maybe it should not be left alive.
"It doesn’t matter if it’s not pretty; it can sing," Ye Nianchu said with excitement.
Was she thinking about keeping it?
Qin Mubai smiled a bit more.
The sound it made could charm people.
Whether it was pretty or not, it shouldn’t be left alive.
_
By 3:50 a.m., the sea mist began to clear.
Ye Nianchu was able to return to her room and sleep peacefully.
It was only the sixth day, and if they had to deal with this every night, it would be very tiring.
Maybe they could study the webbed creature each night and find a way to catch it.
But first, they needed to find a way to deal with the hypnotic sound that made people so sleepy.
Another question was if there was just one creature or more.
And would guns work?
