Chapter 66: The Fading City (31)

Raindrops gradually form a line on the wide pavement. The thunder rumbles, and the patter of rain creates a soothing cover, muffling other sounds.

Inside the car, the two of them drive steadily into the distance, watching the windshield wipers sway back and forth. They observe zombies wandering aimlessly along the roadside. This brief moment allows them to catch their breath and reflect.

They have chosen a remote route, free from abandoned vehicles that might block their path. Their speed has slowed from the previous dangerous pace.

The rain won’t last long. They know they won’t reach their destination before dark, so there’s no need to hurry. Since the place they are heading to is the origin of the zombie virus, going there at night would be a suicide mission. They have already planned where they will stay tonight.

“Sister, you were once an S-class player with special abilities, weren’t you?” Qin Mubai asked, glancing slightly towards her.

It’s clear that she must have also experienced the consequences of using her special abilities forcefully. The item that He Junheng took from her was her special ability.

Ye Nianchu’s delicate face remained expressionless as she responded with a quiet “Hmm.” Even if she had guessed, hearing it spoken out loud still made her uneasy.

Qin Mubai noticed her discomfort and decided to change the subject. “Actually, I didn’t have anything to do with it earlier. I have offsetting props.”

“Thank you,” Ye Nianchu said after a few seconds of silence. “I appreciate it.”

Offsetting props. An offsetting prop worth 999 points. Survival game players who spend on these props are rare compared to those who spend on points.

Qin Mubai’s eyelashes fluttered slightly as he glanced at her with a warm smile. “Can you tell me your name, sister?”

“Ye Nianchu.”

This was the first time she had revealed information about her real identity in the survival game.

As darkness fell, they arrived at the city library, used their lock-picking skills to access the inner archives, and quickly dealt with several zombies they encountered along the way.

Dinner consisted of self-heating meals and canned food, which was a far cry from the luxurious hotel fare they had the previous day. However, given the circumstances, having a warm meal was quite a comfort.

The archive was pitch black, and occasional cries of zombies could be heard from outside. They had flashlights but couldn’t use them, so they relied on the dim light from their cell phones to navigate.

“Sister, you should rest tonight, and I’ll keep watch,” Qin Mubai offered.

There was a recliner next to the desk, likely used by the staff for breaks.

“Let’s take turns,” Ye Nianchu suggested with a smile. They both needed rest after today’s journey.

“Okay,” Qin Mubai agreed.

In the darkness, his smile was gentle and calm. Ye Nianchu felt uneasy. “Remember to wake me up. You must wake me up.”

Qin Mubai, lost in thought, lowered his gaze and gave a small smile before nodding in agreement under Ye Nianchu’s watchful eyes. If he hadn’t agreed, she would have stayed awake with him all night.

---

The next day.

The sky began to lighten, and the first rays of the morning sun fell gently on the window sill.

Twenty days into the game.

Ye Nianchu rested her chin on her hands, gazing at the peaceful face before her. It was pleasant just to watch him while he slept.

In the soft morning light, his thick eyelashes cast a gentle shadow over his face. His skin was like lustrous white porcelain, radiating a clear and warm aura.

Whether in the game world or the real world, Ye Nianchu had never seen anyone more attractive than him.

She felt an urge to reach out and poke him. But she decided it was better not to act on it, as she doubted she could actually bring herself to do it.

Just then, Qin Mubai suddenly opened his eyes. His gaze was cool and calm, with no trace of emotion. This was undoubtedly his true self.

A high spender on kryptonite points.

“Good morning, sister,” Qin Mubai said with a faint smile, appearing perfectly well-behaved and harmless.

Translation Update! 🍙 Translation Update! 🍙 ✨ Quick note: English isn't my first language, so please understand there might be some typos or awkward phrasing - I'm doing my best! ✨ Hey everyone, just a quick update: As of today, April 28, 2025 , I want to give you all a heads-up about a few small issues you might come across in the story, specifically with some of the prop names. It's not exactly a typo issue—it's more about changes I've made over time. For instance, I originally used the term 'data concealment number' but later changed it to 'number concealment data.' Since these are just prop names in the story, it's not a major issue for the plot, but I totally get that some of you might find it a little annoying if you're really particular about details. ...

“Bang—” The air trembled, and bright light hit Gu Zhan's eyelids, making him squint. “Patient 707 has been admitted.” A cold female voice sounded. Patient 707? Who? Gu Zhan squinted against the blinding light and realized he was lying down under a surgical shadowless lamp. Next to him stood several people in deep green surgical scrubs, their faces obscured by the light. One of them leaned over to look at him; the blue medical mask covered most of his features, leaving only a pair of narrow, dark eyes visible. He said, “707 has woken up. Administer a sedative.” A syringe pierced the back of Gu Zhan's hand, and the cold liquid flowed in, gradually blurring his consciousness... ... “Crash—” “Bang!” The sound of metal clashing echoed sharply. A metal bed was forcefully pushed away, sliding a great distance before crashing against the wall. Gu Zhan's head struck the bed frame heavily, and the intense pain momentarily brought him back to awareness. Then came the sound of a door ...

The broadcast from the main system echoed throughout the instance. In the pitch-black snowy night, accompanied by the eerie howling wind of the ebony forest, Jiang Yan felt utterly disoriented. The "Hunter" in front of him couldn’t hear the main system’s intrusive voice and was still waiting for his "little sheep" to kiss him. However, Jiang Yan simply reached out, gently touched the demon-like ram horns of the "Hunter," and then unhesitatingly pulled the blanket over his head. Hunter: "...So disobedient." Soon after, a kiss landed softly on the top of Jiang Yan's head. A pair of long, broad hands rested on his waist as the "Hunter" drifted into slumber. Meanwhile, the game forum’s players erupted into an explosive celebration: [I’m dying of laughter! What kind of penalty is this?? It’s my first time hearing such a ridiculous deduction reason!] [“Please immediately kiss the BOSS.” What the heck? Hahaha...] [This will go down...

Jiang Yan ignored 663, curling up under the blanket like a quail. The "Hunter" holding him would occasionally rub his head, seemingly captivated by the texture. Jiang Yan obediently played the role of a "pet." Based on his years of watching horror movies and reading scary stories, he knew that being "clever" or "kind-hearted" in such games only led to quicker deaths. "You still have five days," the Hunter said, savoring the softness and compliance of the person in his arms. His pale, pupil-less eyes glinted with pleasure. Although a sheep's head couldn't show human expressions, it was clear he was smiling. Hearing this, the four people huddled in the cage shivered in unison. Only Wang Yu sat blankly by the edge, tears streaming as he gazed at his lover. The "Cops and Robbers" Game The "Hunter" acted as the cop, giving the players (the "robbers") ten days to escape the forest. If they found t...

In early September, during a Mathematical Analysis class at A University of Science and Technology, the sophomore students were noticeably distracted. The young professor at the podium glanced down and spotted a large group of students engrossed in their phones. Though he wasn’t a high school teacher, he couldn’t help but lament inwardly: “This generation is worse than the last. Even in Math Analysis class, they dare to slack off?” He could already envision the dismal outcomes on the final grades. Clearing his throat somewhat theatrically, he still received no attention. Growing annoyed, the professor resolved to be tough with the grades this year to combat this poor attitude. At the back of the classroom, Ge Zhicheng's heart raced as he continuously refreshed the backend of the academic system's page. What the professor didn’t know was that today was the day for second-year students in the College of Science to be reassigned to dormitories; the assignment list would be post...
