Chapter 45: The Fading City (10)
A notice was released on TV advising everyone to stay indoors and avoid both infected people and hospitals. The virus is highly contagious and can be spread through bites or scratches from infected individuals.
If you encounter an infected person, immediately find a weapon and aim for their head.
Then, the TV signal went off the air.
It was the seventh day of the game. The city government of Searle had organized the police and firefighters, who were now fully armed, to clear out the zombies.
Although the zombies were fast, they were not very resistant to real bullets, and things seemed to be improving.
People stayed inside their homes, hoping for good news.
The streets were filled with abandoned vehicles, including several luxury cars. Blackened human tissue was scattered on the ground, attracting a swarm of flies.
The hot weather made the air smell even worse, filled with the stench of rotting corpses.
Ye Nianchu, staying on a high floor, was not affected by the air quality but still avoided going out to the balcony. She wore a mask whenever she checked the situation outside.
The food provided by the hotel was less plentiful and less fresh than before, but they continued to offer it.
Ye Nianchu and Qin Mubai ate the food they had stocked up earlier but ordered some food from the hotel every day to avoid drawing attention.
They were the only two people on this floor, and the surveillance feed on the laptop remained calm and uneventful.
Early in the morning, Ye Nianchu noticed some communication disruptions and took action; many videos and messages on the internet were blocked.
In the evening, it rained heavily. The torrent washed away the dark blood clots into the drains.
(Game Day 8)
The golden sunlight broke through the clouds, the sky was clear and blue, and the water vapor on the ground evaporated quickly in the heat.
A faint crashing sound came from outside. Qin Mubai looked and saw a crow pecking furiously at the glass, its black feathers stained with oozing black blood.
With a cool and indifferent gaze, he picked up a dinner knife and walked out onto the terrace.
As he opened the door, the crow flapped its wings and flew inside.
He raised his hand and, with a swift motion, severed the crow's head from its body.
When Ye Nianchu came out of the room, she saw Qin Mubai wearing medical rubber gloves, carefully examining the dissected bird on the ground.
She walked over to look. "What's happening?"
"This crow is infected, similar to a zombie dog," Qin Mubai said, using a scalpel to examine the crow's corpse.
"It's surprising it could fly so high despite its internal tissues being necrotic."
Ye Nianchu thought for a moment, "If crows and dogs can be infected, then other animals might be too..."
"It's too early to make any conclusions. Some animals carry viruses without getting sick, but this doesn't mean the same is true for humans and other animals."
Qin Mubai removed his gloves, poured some alcohol over the crow, and burned the body along with the gloves.
Ye Nianchu stared into the distance, thinking, "Things are going too smoothly."
The streets had been cleared of zombies one after another, and it seemed like humanity was on the verge of victory.
But players knew that the game was not that simple, especially with A-rated difficulty.
"I'm with my sister in thinking that the toughest challenge in this round might not be the zombies."
Qin Mubai looked through binoculars to observe the outside. "I'm going out to look for clues about how the virus spreads. I'll be back before nightfall."
"I don't want my sister to think that my only role is the space ability."
Seeing his serious expression, Ye Nianchu pursed her lips. After a long pause, she finally said, "You're too modest."
Ye Nianchu used to have only about 40 square feet of space, while most of the S-class players at that time only had around a dozen square feet. The initial space was only as large as a big organizer, just enough to store some food and water.
