Chapter 39: The Fading City (4)

(Day 4 of the game)

Today's weather is much more comfortable than the past two days, with gentle winds and clear skies.

Ye Nianchu lay on a chair by the pool, using her phone to arrange a weapon purchase. She was very careful with these transactions, confirming every detail multiple times before agreeing to the deal.

There had been no updates on the animal attacks, and the anchor who disappeared last night was still missing. This made her even more convinced that something was wrong.

Her laptop played a news report warning about mosquito bites in summer. It noted a recent increase in dermatology visits at hospitals, with many patients showing similar symptoms:

Ulcerated skin, mild colds, and feeling unwell.

Some patients with more severe cases were losing their hair and nails.

The cause of this strange illness was still unknown. Doctors were unsure of what to do, so they could only provide basic treatments.

The disease seemed to be spreading slowly. Ye Nianchu decided to quickly get her weapons and avoid going out as much as possible.

In the afternoon, she drove to the agreed location.

"Little sister, do you really need so many weapons?"

The man with a cigarette looked at Ye Nianchu with curiosity. In his long time in this business, he had never seen such a young girl buying so many weapons.

She had bought a variety of items, from guns and bullets to daggers and knives.

With a hood added, she could even rob a bank...

She had wanted to buy a bomb as well, but it was too difficult to get.

"Cash and goods exchanged," Ye Nianchu said, glancing at him. "According to the rules, you shouldn’t ask more questions."

After saying that, she dragged her suitcase and walked out.

The man behind her was surprised. Her demeanor suggested she was involved in serious matters.

Perhaps in a few days, he might hear about this girl's actions on the news.

---

At the city center intersection, the traffic was heavy, with cars waiting for the red light. Ye Nianchu was stuck near the sidewalk, with three cars stopped in front of her.

There were many pedestrians on both sides of the road.

A young man approached, looking unwell.

His eyes were deeply sunken, and he walked unsteadily, as if he might fall at any moment. Even when someone bumped into him, he did not react.

"Sir, are you okay?" asked a nearby person.

The man slowly raised his head. His face was extremely pale, and he stared blankly at the blood vessels in the neck of the person in front of him. He swallowed hard, as if struggling with something.

"Do you need help with—"

Before the sentence could be finished, the man suddenly went wild. He bit the other person's neck, tearing off a piece of flesh. Blood spurted out and spilled onto the ground.

"Ah—"

The scream was so loud that it drowned out the noise of the street.

People who didn’t know what was happening were drawn to the scene and gathered to watch.

The victim lay on the ground, covered in blood, and soon stopped moving.

Seeing the bloody scene, the onlookers finally realized they needed to run.

But it was too late.

The man who had looked so sick moments before, after killing someone, now seemed crazed. His movements were suddenly quick and strong.

He turned his head with a grating sound and lunged at his next target.

The person who had been attacked earlier, even with his neck’s blood vessels severed, got up again in less than two minutes. His eyes were cloudy and lifeless, and he began to attack and bite others randomly.

The chaos of screams and cries continued. People ignored the pedestrian traffic signals and ran frantically to the other side.

With the light now green, the sudden rush of people caused the cars to stop. Vehicles that didn’t brake in time either hit pedestrians or collided with other cars.

Translation Update! 🍙 Translation Update! 🍙 ✨ Quick note: English isn't my first language, so please understand there might be some typos or awkward phrasing - I'm doing my best! ✨ Hey everyone, just a quick update: As of today, April 28, 2025 , I want to give you all a heads-up about a few small issues you might come across in the story, specifically with some of the prop names. It's not exactly a typo issue—it's more about changes I've made over time. For instance, I originally used the term 'data concealment number' but later changed it to 'number concealment data.' Since these are just prop names in the story, it's not a major issue for the plot, but I totally get that some of you might find it a little annoying if you're really particular about details. ...

“Bang—” The air trembled, and bright light hit Gu Zhan's eyelids, making him squint. “Patient 707 has been admitted.” A cold female voice sounded. Patient 707? Who? Gu Zhan squinted against the blinding light and realized he was lying down under a surgical shadowless lamp. Next to him stood several people in deep green surgical scrubs, their faces obscured by the light. One of them leaned over to look at him; the blue medical mask covered most of his features, leaving only a pair of narrow, dark eyes visible. He said, “707 has woken up. Administer a sedative.” A syringe pierced the back of Gu Zhan's hand, and the cold liquid flowed in, gradually blurring his consciousness... ... “Crash—” “Bang!” The sound of metal clashing echoed sharply. A metal bed was forcefully pushed away, sliding a great distance before crashing against the wall. Gu Zhan's head struck the bed frame heavily, and the intense pain momentarily brought him back to awareness. Then came the sound of a door ...

The broadcast from the main system echoed throughout the instance. In the pitch-black snowy night, accompanied by the eerie howling wind of the ebony forest, Jiang Yan felt utterly disoriented. The "Hunter" in front of him couldn’t hear the main system’s intrusive voice and was still waiting for his "little sheep" to kiss him. However, Jiang Yan simply reached out, gently touched the demon-like ram horns of the "Hunter," and then unhesitatingly pulled the blanket over his head. Hunter: "...So disobedient." Soon after, a kiss landed softly on the top of Jiang Yan's head. A pair of long, broad hands rested on his waist as the "Hunter" drifted into slumber. Meanwhile, the game forum’s players erupted into an explosive celebration: [I’m dying of laughter! What kind of penalty is this?? It’s my first time hearing such a ridiculous deduction reason!] [“Please immediately kiss the BOSS.” What the heck? Hahaha...] [This will go down...

Jiang Yan ignored 663, curling up under the blanket like a quail. The "Hunter" holding him would occasionally rub his head, seemingly captivated by the texture. Jiang Yan obediently played the role of a "pet." Based on his years of watching horror movies and reading scary stories, he knew that being "clever" or "kind-hearted" in such games only led to quicker deaths. "You still have five days," the Hunter said, savoring the softness and compliance of the person in his arms. His pale, pupil-less eyes glinted with pleasure. Although a sheep's head couldn't show human expressions, it was clear he was smiling. Hearing this, the four people huddled in the cage shivered in unison. Only Wang Yu sat blankly by the edge, tears streaming as he gazed at his lover. The "Cops and Robbers" Game The "Hunter" acted as the cop, giving the players (the "robbers") ten days to escape the forest. If they found t...

In early September, during a Mathematical Analysis class at A University of Science and Technology, the sophomore students were noticeably distracted. The young professor at the podium glanced down and spotted a large group of students engrossed in their phones. Though he wasn’t a high school teacher, he couldn’t help but lament inwardly: “This generation is worse than the last. Even in Math Analysis class, they dare to slack off?” He could already envision the dismal outcomes on the final grades. Clearing his throat somewhat theatrically, he still received no attention. Growing annoyed, the professor resolved to be tough with the grades this year to combat this poor attitude. At the back of the classroom, Ge Zhicheng's heart raced as he continuously refreshed the backend of the academic system's page. What the professor didn’t know was that today was the day for second-year students in the College of Science to be reassigned to dormitories; the assignment list would be post...
