The rain outside fell harder, fast and powerful, the raindrops hitting the window like musical notes, instantly soaking the ground and causing splashes to form on the road.
She looked up at Xiang Ran.
The hand that had been gripping his shirt let go, and she shook her head as if trying to clear her mind.
Xiang Ran sensed that the school beauty seemed about to say something.
He reached behind Liu Shuyao to fluff her pillow and then sat back down, ready to listen.
The atmosphere between them seemed to grow cold again.
Xiang Ran stopped looking at her, his eyes fixed on the fluid in the IV drip.
Liu Shuyao was still unwell, her voice hoarse.
“I remember everything, about the accident.”
“It was the night we saw the meteor shower.”
“Yeah.”
Even though he had mentally prepared for it, hearing the school beauty say that in front of him still made him feel like he had overestimated himself.
He sat across from Liu Shuyao, feeling the distance between them, even after days of closeness.
Xiang Ran's mind was blank, waiting for Liu Shuyao to speak.
In the past few days, he couldn’t help but think of all the worst and most unbearable scenarios.
As this moment approached, various anxious emotions gathered in his heart like dark clouds pressing down.
But Liu Shuyao unexpectedly stopped talking.
The room fell silent for a moment.
“Are you breaking up with me?”
“Do you still like me?”
They locked eyes and spoke at the same time.
“What?”
“Breaking up?”
Liu Shuyao reacted faster than Xiang Ran, her eyes immediately reddening at his words.
Looking at the marks on his arm, where the little kitten still rested, she recalled their previous conversations, biting her lip hard, her eyes glistening with tears, her nose turning slightly red.
Xiang Ran couldn’t stand Liu Shuyao's expression and panicked, unsure of what to say.
“No, no, no. It’s not that.”
“I thought… that’s not what I meant. I didn’t want to break up with you.”
The more he explained, the quieter his voice became, and eventually, he let his sleeve fall to cover the marks, fearing Liu Shuyao would bring it up again.
“Then is it because I lost my memory that you…”
Liu Shuyao spoke slowly.
“No, it has nothing to do with your memory.”
“It’s just because it’s you!”
Xiang Ran urgently interrupted her, knowing this day would come.
As he finished speaking, raindrops lightly tapped on the window, their irregular sound echoing in the room.
Feeling the discomfort of waiting to be judged, Xiang Ran thought about getting a glass of water.
But Liu Shuyao suddenly grabbed the edge of his shirt.
In a moment of distraction, she accidentally tugged on the IV in her hand.
The sharp pain on the back of her hand made her bite her lip and let out a tiny “hiss.”
Hearing the sound, Xiang Ran instinctively grasped Liu Shuyao's hand and gently placed it back at the edge of the bed, checking for any signs of the needle slipping.
“Did I pull too hard?”
Liu Shuyao shook her head, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears, looking pitiful.
She clung tightly to his shirt, unwilling to let go.
Without realizing it, she moved closer to Xiang Ran, her lips parting and voice soft as she mumbled:
“Honey~”
“I’ve been waiting for you all day~”
After a moment, the room was quiet, and the rain outside slowed down, as if delicate sunlight squeezed through the clouds.
“Yeah.”
Xiang Ran replied softly. This felt like a secret code between them.
Compared to the panic he felt when he first heard this phrase in the hospital, hearing it now brought him a sense of reassurance, calming his earlier worries.
Upon hearing his response, Liu Shuyao gradually relaxed.
Phew!
Thank goodness!
It’s good that he’s still my boyfriend.
Li Meixun was right; liking someone has nothing to do with memory loss. Liu Shuyao, already feeling weak from illness, now wanted even more sweetness.
“Well… there’s still one question.”
Liu Shuyao hesitated, wanting to lean against her boyfriend, licking her lips and lowering her head.
She spoke haltingly about her intentions.
“What are we now?”
Xiang Ran looked at Liu Shuyao, unsure of what she wanted, and slowly asked.
“What do you want our relationship to be?”
“Huh?”
Is that even a response?
Hearing this, Liu Shuyao's face flushed, feeling her boyfriend was being a bit mischievous. She had asked first, but now the initiative slipped away from her.
What Li Meixun and the others said about holding the conversational power and gaining absolute status was really hard.
“I…”
Liu Shuyao stammered, unable to articulate, having intended to boldly say everything, but now Xiang Ran had interrupted her flow.
The school beauty, who had already lacked confidence, became even softer.
“Hmm?”
Xiang Ran asked again.
Under her boyfriend's gaze, Liu Shuyao felt her face heating up.
Her voice was barely a whisper.
“Do you want me to be your girlfriend?”
“Of course I do.”
Upon hearing Xiang Ran's answer, Liu Shuyao felt a surge of confidence and spoke seriously.
“Then you need to pursue me again!”
“Pursue you?”
Xiang Ran was taken aback, seemingly not grasping the meaning.
This expression made Liu Shuyao flinch back, even though he hadn’t done anything, just his gaze made her nervous. She fidgeted with her hands, her toes clutching the bed sheets under the white blanket.
She stuttered in explanation.
“Because our past was a bit strange, I thought maybe we could start over?”
“Just… maybe pursue me a little bit.”
Fearing he wouldn’t believe her, Liu Shuyao quietly added,
“I’m easy to pursue~”
After saying this, Liu Shuyao anxiously looked at Xiang Ran, lifting her head with wide eyes, feeling slightly embarrassed, her ears tinged with pink.
Outside, the rain had stopped, and the sunlight after the rain sprinkled like fine golden threads on the leaves, making them look crystal clear, as if studded with countless tiny gems. The light danced through the window.
“Okay?”
When Xiang Ran didn’t respond right away, Liu Shuyao seemed a bit anxious, her breaths becoming light.
She tugged at his sleeve, cautious.
“Okay.”
Without hesitation, Xiang Ran replied.
But though he answered readily, how should he pursue her? For real or just for show?
Was this a hint?
What was missing from their previous odd encounters?
Was he supposed to confess?
