Chapter 68: The Fading City (33)

The room was eerily silent—no blood, no bodies.

An open file lay on the desk, as if someone had been reading it and had to leave abruptly.

Nearby offices had their doors closed, the lights off, and the darkness was complete inside.

Ye Nianchu turned on the flashlight on her phone and shone it into the darkness. Suddenly, a pair of bloodshot eyes opened, staring at her from within.

She gasped and instinctively took a step back. "They're inside."

This situation was full of unexpected, malicious surprises.

The room was packed with zombies, tightly confined in an airtight space.

Several adjacent offices were similar to this one, with zombies crowding between them.

The presence of the living triggered the zombies. They pounded on the glass, leaving dark blood mixed with yellow-green pus behind.

The laboratory-grade construction materials were sturdier than ordinary ones. However, the office doors were not locked!

This was unfortunate.

In the narrow aisle, zombies were pouring out from the doors. They were trapped between two doors, which was slightly better than encountering zombies directly.

“Go this way,” Qin Mubai said, pulling Ye Nianchu to the right.

The protective barrier kept the incoming zombies at bay. They dashed out of the office area, turned several corners, and took temporary refuge in a closed laboratory.

This was a good refuge, but without an S-Class ability, it probably wouldn’t last more than half a day, depending on the situation.

If they wanted to spend the last five days of the game here, they needed to either clear out the zombies or use the lab’s master control system to lock them in one area.

The latter option was preferable; fighting zombies for several days would be exhausting.

They had brought everything they might need from the hotel, including laptops.

With Qin Mubai’s authority, hacking into the control center shouldn’t be too difficult.

Ye Nianchu opened the computer and quickly typed away. Meanwhile, Qin Mubai used the lab’s computer to check the surveillance and locate the zombies.

A few hours later, the sun was setting.

"All done," Ye Nianchu said with a sigh of relief as she closed the computer lid.

She used the alarm sound to lure the zombies into the office area and then sent a command to lock the entrances and exits.

Most of the zombies were now contained in the office area.

They didn’t need to worry about leaving; they just needed to get through the remaining days here.

"With my sister, the game becomes simpler," Qin Mubai said, leaning back in his chair. His focused expression confirmed the truth of his words.

"Are you sure?"

Wasn’t this round of the game supposed to be easy for him? On the contrary, teaming up with her seemed to skew the luck.

Qin Mubai’s lips curled slightly, and the light and shadows in his eyes shifted. "Yes, sure."

The antidote to the game was supposed to be the real antidote.

If it weren’t for meeting her, this round wouldn’t have been so challenging.

Qin Mubai stood up and pressed a button on the wall, revealing a small lounge.

The lounge was compact but well-equipped with a bed and a sofa, solving their sleeping arrangements.

Game Day 23.

9 a.m.

Ye Nianchu emerged from the lounge and saw Qin Mubai in a white lab coat, tinkering with experimental equipment. The lights reflected off his clear and composed face.

The cold, monotonous laboratory seemed to come alive with color, making it hard to look away.

At that moment, a giant mushroom cloud rose above Searle, its destructive force sweeping through the city.

Buildings collapsed, the sky turned red from the fire, dust and smoke covered the sky, and the earth trembled.

Even in a laboratory far from the ground, they could feel the terrifying power.

The zombie virus may have been cleared from Searle City, but the city is no longer habitable for humans.

On the surveillance screen, the zombies trapped in the office area show no unusual activity. In the vast underground laboratory, only two living people are amidst a sea of zombies.

Translation Update! 🍙 Translation Update! 🍙 ✨ Quick note: English isn't my first language, so please understand there might be some typos or awkward phrasing - I'm doing my best! ✨ Hey everyone, just a quick update: As of today, April 28, 2025 , I want to give you all a heads-up about a few small issues you might come across in the story, specifically with some of the prop names. It's not exactly a typo issue—it's more about changes I've made over time. For instance, I originally used the term 'data concealment number' but later changed it to 'number concealment data.' Since these are just prop names in the story, it's not a major issue for the plot, but I totally get that some of you might find it a little annoying if you're really particular about details. ...

“Bang—” The air trembled, and bright light hit Gu Zhan's eyelids, making him squint. “Patient 707 has been admitted.” A cold female voice sounded. Patient 707? Who? Gu Zhan squinted against the blinding light and realized he was lying down under a surgical shadowless lamp. Next to him stood several people in deep green surgical scrubs, their faces obscured by the light. One of them leaned over to look at him; the blue medical mask covered most of his features, leaving only a pair of narrow, dark eyes visible. He said, “707 has woken up. Administer a sedative.” A syringe pierced the back of Gu Zhan's hand, and the cold liquid flowed in, gradually blurring his consciousness... ... “Crash—” “Bang!” The sound of metal clashing echoed sharply. A metal bed was forcefully pushed away, sliding a great distance before crashing against the wall. Gu Zhan's head struck the bed frame heavily, and the intense pain momentarily brought him back to awareness. Then came the sound of a door ...

The broadcast from the main system echoed throughout the instance. In the pitch-black snowy night, accompanied by the eerie howling wind of the ebony forest, Jiang Yan felt utterly disoriented. The "Hunter" in front of him couldn’t hear the main system’s intrusive voice and was still waiting for his "little sheep" to kiss him. However, Jiang Yan simply reached out, gently touched the demon-like ram horns of the "Hunter," and then unhesitatingly pulled the blanket over his head. Hunter: "...So disobedient." Soon after, a kiss landed softly on the top of Jiang Yan's head. A pair of long, broad hands rested on his waist as the "Hunter" drifted into slumber. Meanwhile, the game forum’s players erupted into an explosive celebration: [I’m dying of laughter! What kind of penalty is this?? It’s my first time hearing such a ridiculous deduction reason!] [“Please immediately kiss the BOSS.” What the heck? Hahaha...] [This will go down...

Jiang Yan ignored 663, curling up under the blanket like a quail. The "Hunter" holding him would occasionally rub his head, seemingly captivated by the texture. Jiang Yan obediently played the role of a "pet." Based on his years of watching horror movies and reading scary stories, he knew that being "clever" or "kind-hearted" in such games only led to quicker deaths. "You still have five days," the Hunter said, savoring the softness and compliance of the person in his arms. His pale, pupil-less eyes glinted with pleasure. Although a sheep's head couldn't show human expressions, it was clear he was smiling. Hearing this, the four people huddled in the cage shivered in unison. Only Wang Yu sat blankly by the edge, tears streaming as he gazed at his lover. The "Cops and Robbers" Game The "Hunter" acted as the cop, giving the players (the "robbers") ten days to escape the forest. If they found t...

In early September, during a Mathematical Analysis class at A University of Science and Technology, the sophomore students were noticeably distracted. The young professor at the podium glanced down and spotted a large group of students engrossed in their phones. Though he wasn’t a high school teacher, he couldn’t help but lament inwardly: “This generation is worse than the last. Even in Math Analysis class, they dare to slack off?” He could already envision the dismal outcomes on the final grades. Clearing his throat somewhat theatrically, he still received no attention. Growing annoyed, the professor resolved to be tough with the grades this year to combat this poor attitude. At the back of the classroom, Ge Zhicheng's heart raced as he continuously refreshed the backend of the academic system's page. What the professor didn’t know was that today was the day for second-year students in the College of Science to be reassigned to dormitories; the assignment list would be post...
